Ruhrtriennale 2012: at the rehearsal with Heiner Goebbels
„To some extent, it’s like bringing the art of the world into the Ruhr area“
The Ruhrtriennale 2012-14 has started – in charge of the artistic direction is Heiner Goebbels whose production of John Cage’s Europeras 1&2 in the Jahrhunderthalle Bochum is meant to reinstall the Ruhrtriennale as the outstanding festival it once was with Gerard Mortier at the helm. Nothing less than the rediscovery of theatre as a powerful medium, complemented by the creative spirit of the industrial revolution in the respective venues will be celebrated here.
There’s no opening curtain – this is theatre without compromises, including all signature trademarks, pushed to the limits in the most productive sense. Goebbels knows very well how hard this work is, how to leave the typecast genre and set definitions behind – and says, in his own humble words: „I make my own programme.“
On the occasion of a public rehearsal for Europeras 1&2, Dr. Dieter Nellen, head of the division culture and sports at the Regionalverband Ruhr (RVR), had invited students of the department of dramatics at the Ruhr-Universität Bochum to the Jahrhunderthalle. Heiner Goebbels answered their questions regarding competent audience, discovering theatre, and theatre institutionalisation.
