Walking House roams the Emscher island
- Series: EMSCHERKUNST
Slowly, a house walks around the Emscher Island on its six feet. The „Walking House" is a project of EMSCHERKUNST.2010 and can be used by artists, authors, writers, but also the population as a residence and workplace. 2010LAB.tv talks about the idea behind the project with the artist Ion Sorvin.

Ion Sorvin and his artist group N55 develop systems which make it possible for people to deign their own place for work or life. Walking House is an epitome of such a home regardless of social or societal structures.
In the course of EMSCHERKUNST.2010, the robot house is supposed to demonstrate a »peaceful nomadic life« without neglecting any modern amenities:
Up to four persons can live in the modular habitable system with a small kitchen and bathroom. The furniture is integrated into the construction. It consists of different materials such as steel, aluminum, wood, and textiles. The windows are made of polycarbonate.
The six telescope legs move the Walking House with the speed of a slowly walking man. The Walking House can not only move about on levelled roads, but also in rough terrain.
Everything is ecological: the house has a rainwater collector, a compost toilet, a wood fired oven, and a solar system for heating water. A small greenhouse can be docked to it, this provides the inhabitants with the opportunity to grow part of their food in it.

Walking House Walking House is supposed to combine aspects of top-notch ecology and trendsetting urbanity with a wry wink. Ion Sorvin does not consider Walking House to be a mission concept to teach people the right way to live. It is more of an incentive to try other forms of life: „Trying is the best way of giving it a chance of success”.

These days, more than 5 million inhabitants do experience the transformation of their post- industrial Ruhr area in the western part of Germany to an exciting European „place to be“, a budding metropolis in a post-Capital of Culture 2010 identification process with its industrial culture as part of a collective memory being a characteristic feature – and an orchestrated mass event.
