Prototypen 2010 festival: creative incentives for handling the climate change

Culture through climate change - change through "Prototypen": that motto describes the „Prototypen“ festival best. For one day and one night, the „gARTen“, a public lawn in Dortmund’s Nordstadt district, was turned into a future workshop. The „Prototypen“ festival presented its very own and unique suggestions for handling and coping with global warming and climate change, beyond those well-known popular ones such as energy saving lamps or solar panel roofs. Also part of the event: the presentation of creative incentives for the challenge to produce something great with little energy.

Pedalling for electricity

During the open air event which was held in the course of the Transindustriale on September 4, the electricity for the numerous multi media performances of the artists had to be generated by the visitors themselves. By pedalling on a bike, a dynamo transferred the kinetic energy, so the human generator experienced directly how hard it is to generate sufficient wattage. But for festival director Thomas Enbergs it was also important to alert the visitors to energy efficiency without finger-pointing and to handle the problems of climate change not in the usual way of painting a horror scenario.
