PICNIC 2012: Own your own life!

Social design, open data, and 3D printing help us on our way to self-determination and global responsibility

The seventh edition of the PICNIC Festival in Amsterdam was a big success.  The events dealing with the topic of new ownership in the EYE Film Institut were completely sold out.  More than 3000 participants discussed with the invited experts in the EYE institute, and they also were able to get some practical insight into the possibilities of this year’s topic, new ownership.

Waag Society combines Social Design Thinking and the technology of 3D-Printing, thus creating some highly innovative projects, be it the creative learning lab with the Young Socratic Conversation, the Fairphone, a smart phone produced with sustainable materials, or even a DIY prosthesis. A new spirit has come up which enables people to take charge  of things and to help others – worldwide. These days, education and the learning process should be fun for pupils and students.

Louisa Heinrich from the service design agency Fjord wants each person to benefit from her or his data footprints created by the use of modern appliances. To her, it is obvious: “For me ownership is about choice.“ Nevertheless, you have to generate a new awareness for the diversity of individual ownership. In order to make a really good choice, you can indeed use all available information on you and others as a corrective means. Considering this, Open Data has redefined the old inflexible term ownership for some time already.
