Forum d´Avignon - European cinema at the digital crossroads

Apart from the handling of cultural goods, their financing and marketing was one of the main issues at the Forum d'Avignon 2010. This 2010Lab.tv interview focuses on cinema and digitalisation.

Tradition or global assimilation?

Where is the future of European cinema? In the interesting area between digitalisation and tradition, new chances for the cinema as an institution may emerge. But there is also the danger of a global cinema featuring mostly assimilated contents.

Ignasi Guardans

Digitale cinemas - chances and dangers

Mahesh Bhatt
Film maker and producer Mahesh Bhatt considers the new technological possibilities of digital cinemas as a big chance – as long as they are used in a responsible way and the diversity of the cinema world is maintained.

Philippe Reynaert
Since the big American film studios subsidise the equipment of digital theatres as long as their films are being screened in them, Philippe Reynaert is aware of the danger of this development. The European cinema has to confront its American competition – relying on the various respective regional roots in Europe while tackling this task.
