Essen's North - vacancies with a lot of potential

In Essen's Viehofer Straße, more and more discoteques, boutiques and galleries are settling. Nevertheless, the northern part of the inner city is not an in-quarter. The extension of the popular shopping street Limbeckerstraße is afflicted with prejudice. 2010LAB.tv asks the different players of the soon-to-be creative quarter what, according to them, were the determining factors for such quarter and why the northern part of the inner city is to become one.
Due to the different players that are involved in a city development process, numerous variables and factors arise. Amongst others, they are freedom, transparency, vacancies, low rents and people from the creative industry.
It is forward-looking to call a round table with all of the involved. Business development, city planning and the creatives on-site meet up to discuss. They explain the potentials of the region and how you could promote them long-term in a joint effort.
The urbanist Charles Landry put the vision of a creative city into the following words: "With every bigger city project that is regarded as creative, we should keep in mind that it shouldn't be trying to become the most creative place worldwide or even in the area. It should strive for being the best and most visionary city for the world. This little change in the wording – from “in" to "for" – has dramatic consequences for the ramifications of the planning dynamics.“
The following factors are already a given in Essen: The city follows the unconventional thinkers who provided the basis for a creative quarter in Essen, and not the other way round. In the course of this, the Ministry of Culture approached Reinhard Wiesemann, the owner of the Unperfekthaus, which the intention to discuss the success of his projects. The gallery Scribble Gebibble was created on the initiative of the artist point of contact Siegfried Schneider who connected the artists with the landlord.
