EMSCHERKUNST.2010 – Tadashi Kawamata's tower attracts people to the Emscher

In Castrop-Rauxel, the Rhine-Herne canal crosses the Emscher. Since summer 2010, a monumental wooden tower stands close close to this watercross. Apart from his function as a public structure, it has been conceived as an aesthetical, artistic sculpture. Tadashi Kawamata has designed and built the monument.

The Japanese installation artist and professor at the academy of arts in Paris deliberately works with installations which are related to their respective environs. His construction materials, mostly untreated wood, make his works seemingly fragile, epitomising the process of growth and decay in nature.

A path leads interested visitors to the hill where the tower which is open to th epublic awaits them. Standing on the platform, the bird’s eye perspective offers a panoramic view over the smelly sewer and the extensive, lush grass area which now covers the Emscher terrain and its former history. Bicyclists and walkers can enjoy this new landmark. A stopover at Tadashi’s tower is another optical highlight along the multifaceted Emscher route.

Filmmaker Saschko Frey has been tracking the EMSCHERKUNST.2010 project with his camera since 2008, delivering an intense impression of the artists, their ideas, and selected locations along the Emscher.

The result, a series of episodes on the genesis of this unique art project, is presented here by 2010LAB.tv.
