Women for Peace
Women gathered for peace in Taksim Square
Mankind has been waging wars for a multitude of reasons. One might argue that even the generic pronoun used here, “mankind”, refers to the underlying patriarchal logic within wars. On the other hand one might say that history is also full of examples where wars are waged for the cause of women like the Trojan war. Yet I guess not many would object to the claim that women end up being if not the only the double victims in war.
Such a claim would definitely have relevance within current Turkey where there is still ongoing political and ethnic unrest. What is generally referred to as the Kurdish issue has a major impact on the lives of women particularly in the southeastern parts of Turkey. When their husbands or children are recruited by either military authorities or the terrorists, they are left behind with the anxious wait for the return of the departed ones, but not with many resources or possibilities to maintain a certain life standard. Therefore they have a particularly intimate longing for peace in its truest sense.
Istanbul Women’s Initiative for Peace proved her solidarity and empathy with such a longing for peace by the gathering they organized last week in Taksim Square.
Hundreds of women gathered together at their appointed point of peace to make their voice heard for silencing the noise of guns. There were not only mothers and wives but young women who knew the significance of peace and who could empathize with the sorrows of others besides being carried away with their daily routine. Unfortunately the action planned to take place between 6pm and midnight was called off earlier by the police force.
It was an impressive sight to witness with banners which read in Turkish, Kurdish and English “Women want peace”. Perhaps this will encourage us all to voice in any language our wish for peace and hopefully this will also contaminate others regardless of their gender. Istanbul might feel like a saved haven for some but it is in need of that peace for sure….
