Video mapping: The new restoration
Creative Factory turns former granary into jewel of the neigbourhood
Why invest in paints that will be dulled by traffic within the year, when you can turn your building into a prism of visual wonder, the Creative Factory must have thought and right they were! On the 22nd of September, after two years of municipal lobbying, the moment had arrived: a mega beamer would cover the six stories high building.
The Creative Factory has been offering workspace to creative entrepreneurs since 2008. They are situated in a former granary besides the river Meuse, which houses more than 70 creative, small businesses.
The colossal building breathes not only history when seen from the outside, but also a stern industrialism. With so much liveliness going on inside, the Creative Factory team wanted to show this on the outside too.
Video mapping seemed the only right way to show the liveliness of the creative entrepreneuring going on inside. It would also ensure that the look and feel of the Creative Factory would stay up-to-date with the latest developments inside the building.
The Creative Factory entrepreneurs could enlist their ideas in a beamer pitch.
Architect Farhan Alibux, from Zerologic, had a field day when his idea was awarded with a € 500,- bonus!
Farhan: ‘My idea was fairly simple. We’re going to build an app with which you can play games like Tetris or Pac Man from your phone or tablet. They will be simultaneously be projected on the building. An ideal game for the smoke break outside or for the bored kids hanging around.’
Every night for the coming two years, from sunset until four in the morning, the beamer projects images from Creative Factory entrepreneurs, video mapping expert David Louf and neighborhood creatives.
In 1906, the Maassilo was the largest granary of Rotterdam, today it has become the biggest cinema screen of Europe. Talk about progress!
