Street Art Communication, pt. 2

New kind of thinking - Street Art 2.0

As promised, here we are back with the topic of street art in Košice. This time we are looking at the local scene with the perspective of French artist Pierrick aka Cart1, who cooperated on the workshop MAP THE WALL during the Street Art Communication festival. The concept consisted of Pierrick's sprayed characters and NanoVj's mapping projection. Together with some guests, a mix media installation was recorded and is available to watch at the bottom of the blog. In the interview, we find out the relativity of time, size and prejudices.

Your images are full of detail, of life, how did you achieve this technique, did you study art or is it pure talent and passion for expressing yourself?
I have been painting for 22 years. I first began doing graffiti in the streets and I studied in an art school after. I learnt lots about techniques and art history. After 8 years of learning, I came back to my first love -sprays! But I have never been a real “vandal”, because I am slow and I have always loved working in details and with 3D effects.

When my friends needed 5 minutes to create something, I needed 3 more hours. That’s why I prefer to put some characters almost hidden in the streets because I need time to achieve my work. I don’t like either doing big graffiti pieces – I'd rather draw characters, details or little items lost on walls. I like playing with places and playing reality with 3D effects. I would like my work to come as a shock to people who discover it around the corner.

It was not your first stay in Kosice. What did bring you here for the first time and why did you come again?
It’s my 4th time in Kosice. My first time was in 2008 to work on a project in Kasarne for a French theater band. I met Viktor Feher who helped me find cans in Slovakia and he became a friend. When he created the SAC festival, he asked me to come and support his project. I had a great time on my first trip and I met a lot of funky and funny people around Viktor. Now it’s the Tabachka team. When you are offered to come back to a funky place with funky people, what are you going to do? I just say: Count me in!

Where do you see differences between Slovak and French graffiti scene?
RUSKA!!! (drink)
Seriously, I haven't had the chance to see the entire Slovakian scene nor real differences. Whatever the foreigner’s visions on countries are, they are always wrong. So, I just hope for the Slovakian scene to stay open minded. I love styles and people who open my mind or make me laugh.

Do you have more experiences with combination mapping/painting? Does it move your work into new dimension?
It was the first I had such an experience: painting and letting others play with my characters. But I created a R&D department in the French art project, the “Abode of Chaos”, where I work. We seek to create technological graffiti devices or any other device, the aim being to rethink street-art through technology. I’m really interested in new media research, especially the work of the “Graffiti research lab”. I think it’s a new way, a new kind of thinking street-art -the street-art 2.0.
