So, you’re into skydiving?
Yup. Both of us. Skydiving actually got us our first assignments for promovideos and the likes. The name is the first thing clients ask about it. It’s a good way to ease into a meeting.
Crealistic, another Creative Factory company, mentioned you’re all about doing crazy projects, give us a scoop?
We’re actually setting up a science fiction project. We’re thinking about an Indiana Jones kind of farmer in a post apocalyptic Rotterdam. We want to make it with all the expertise of the companies we’ve got in the Factory. It’ll be crazy and great! Combining the powers of all these small companies gives us a chance to show what we can do. In this way we can battle those big companies that spend most of their money on talking.
Do I hear a grudge?
Not really. But we both worked at bigger AV-companies and we found out that the actual work is always done by the guys sweating in the basement. Of course Chesterfield couches in the hallway make a bigger impression than our dark den, but we are those guys from the basement: we have the expertise minus the overhead costs for the couches.
So when did you decide to leave the basement and start your own show?
We studied together and after five years of working for different companies, we wanted to do it ourselves. It took some more years to build up the courage.
A lot of people start a company because they want a big house and three cars. That’s not our dream. We wanted to make beautiful work and make it better than the other companies out there.
Any tips for the creatives that are considering setting up shop?
Loads! First of: don’t do it! Just kidding...but make sure you have an adequate sense of businessmanagement. The product your selling is probably already good enough, but you need to know how you’ve got to sell it. The way we see it, there are two kinds of businesspeople: The ones that start for the love of their job and the ones that want to sell and don’t care what it is they’re selling. Usually, the second category turns out to be more succesful while the first category has the talent. Being on top doesn’t automatically means the work is top quality, unfortunatly.
And another tip: know what your product is worth! Don’t take on work that is paid way below marketvalue. Once you've sold your work for bargain prices, clients will never pay the real value for future assignments.
How is the Creative Factory working for you?
It’s a continuing stream of working with and influencing each other.
We recently invited two other companies we frequently work with, to join us on this floor. In this way we can offer clients package deals with all of us together; sounddesign, special effects, 3D animation. You name it, we can do it. We’re also broadening our territory with crossmedial work, making applications for the iphone, and game programming.
We’re in awe of Sonic picnics’ credit list. They’ve done so much work! They started their company when they finished school and they currently have two offices: one in the Creative Factory and a second office in Utrecht.
What does the future hold for boys like yourselves?
Well, they’ve been calling Rotterdam Little Hollywood along the river Maas.
For years, government money has been pumped into the dream of making Rotterdam a movie city and it’s working. Loads of films are being shot in Rotterdam. We’re ready to take that dream to the next level.
