Scope on the Creative Factory: Liefdesfotografie: for the love of it!
She films, he photographs, but not necessarily in that order. Liefdesfotografie (love photography) documents weddings in such a passionate manner, that the most romantic day of your life looks like a beautiful movie. Their work would want to make you get married. Liefdesfotografie consists of Emmely van Mierlo and Hidde van der Lijn, both freelance documentary film makers and photographers. Together they make high quality wedding documentations.
Why weddings?
‘When you’re planning a wedding, there are different options; you can ask a cousin who likes to photograph, you can go to a wedding convention and look at the nearly identical work of a seemingly endless stream of mediocre wedding photographers, or you can look for something special, something striking. We missed the artistic uniqueness in the work of the photographers that claimed to be specialised in weddings. They used terms as “spontaneous, documentary photography”, but those words seemed with no meaning. We wanted to bring the passion back into the image.’
So what terms do you use to describe your work?
‘We’re often depicted as stylish, unpretentious, but most of all: close. The wedding sector thrives on feeling. It’s really not about what you’re saying or who you are, but what you make. Our images define and distinguish us most of all.’
What are the pros and cons of working together versus working alone?
‘Together you can do more and reach further. Because there’s always a second pair of eyes nearby, you stay focused and sharp. It avoids your personal “blind spots”. Hidde has more technical knowledge and Emmely is better with keeping in contact with the outside world. The only con we have encountered is our different work rythm. Hidde likes to work late and Emmely is more of a morning person.’
With your specialised line of work, do you find a connection in the creative breeding ground (Creative Factory) with other companies that reside here?
‘Emmely once came to the Factory with the idea that it would get her loads of assignments. That didn’t really happen, but we did find likeminded people here that we can brainstorm with and it’s a nice workspace. We are currently looking for wedding planners we could hook up with.’

Emmely and Hidde are always looking for that special picture.
Has the financial crisis had any effect on your line of work?
‘We started at the height of the financial crisis, so we have no idea if we would’ve had more assignments when times were better. We’ve had a good first year.’
What would be the ideal future for Liefdesfotografie?
‘We want to cherish and keep the craft pure. We won’t work with trainees, because we want to make sure the final product is perfect. We would like to make our first steps across the border to Germany or the Benelux, but only as long as we can keep our quality up. This company is not so much for the profit as it is for the love of it.’
What company from the Creative Factory caught your eye since you came here?
‘Zerologic is an architect that has been residing on our floor for a couple of months now and only recently we got a chance to ask what he was doing. He’s actually designing a mosque all by himself! We think it’s very daring to take on such a big project all by yourself.’
