Scope on the Creative Factory: Crealistic
The Creative Factory is situated in one of the most collosal buildings of the Rotterdam Citycentre: the Maashaven. As I’m writing this from my office on the fifth floor, a panoramic overview of the river, our architecural pride, the Erasmusbrug (lovingly called ‘the swan’) and a never-ending stream of metro and car bustle stream in and become the foundation of this text.
This former grainery has been the biggest of Europe for a century, lived through a brief and extremely succesful period as a disco before being developed as a seven story high officebuilding for young creatives.
The Maashaven houses more than 70 young creative companies at the moment. One of them is Crealistic. An out-of-the-box communications company run by two charming girls. Since they’ve met as students, their company really took off and they bring authenticity and flair back to the usually formal communicationbusiness. Their office on the second floor has a high Manhattan look and feel and shows their love for, well, the colour pink.
Why did you come to the Creative Factory?
We were situated in one of the other breedinggrounds for young officials, in the World Trade Centre. Very panoramic, indeed. But we had no connections with the other businesses there. When we heard of the plans for the Creative Factory to collect creative business, we were immediately enthusiastic and were one of the first to move in at the beginning, in 2008.
Is it everything you ever dreamt of?
The communication to the world outside this building is a constant point of attention. Literally, we think it’s a shame that all the doors are closed on every floor. When you walk through the building you can sense the working-energy, but you can’t see it.
We worked with many businesses situated in the building. Conclusion: We’re happy and the living proof that the ‘Creative Factory vision’, of co-operation between young businesses, to growth, works.
How is the view from your window?
Well one of us gets to see the Katendrecht neigbourhood and a bit of water, and with some luck, cruiseships. The other one looks out on the big steel tower in front of the grainery, not really an eye-catcher...
What has the city of Rotterdam to offer for you?
The creative class in Rotterdam is big and although it is seemingly underground, it’s quickly expanding. In Amsterdam everybody brags about their accomplishments. In Rotterdam we simply do it and move on. We like that no-nonsense mentality.
What project gets your heart beating faster?
We cherish many dreamprojects. We would love to collaborate with other countries, preferably ones with a warm climate, haha!
We keep on lingering on the idea of organising an international fair for creatives in Rotterdam, not just art, but also creative businesses like ours. We’re looking for sponsors, so drop us a line if you’re interested.
What companies did you collaborate with (from the factory)?
We love the photography by Sanne Kanters: She knows exactly how to translate a mood into image.
Also NEST ontwerp, which is situated on our floor can really ‘click’ into our flow when we’re brainstorming.
We always try new collaborations and try not to stick too much to one or two other companies.
What companies have your special attention (from the factory)
Airrebels (audiovisuals) are always locked up in their little cabin, but they’re constantly in the middle of exciting projects. Everything they do, is marked by their wild enthusiasm. And they’re into skydiving, which makes them very cool, in our opinion.
What other city would you like to live & work in? (internationally)
Berlin! Note that this is based on a five-day experience, so perhaps it’s not a completely airtight opinion. We love the sharp border between creativity and history. In one street the vibe can be such and such and in the next, it can be the complete opposite. In Rotterdam the differences between neighbourhood isn’t so apparant.
What can we expect of the future of Crealistic?
Hopefully, the projects that we’re taking on are becoming more our signature work. We’re known for our diverse and big network. We have the strategic mindset and also the creative powers to manage projects with a twist. We would love to organise our own convention!
