NEXT GENERATION – The Play: theatre at the pace of the youth
- Series: CREATIVE QUARTERS RUHR, Bildung
NEXT GENERATION - CREATIVITY HAS TO BE CONTAGIOUS! While the regional and national feuilletons deliver their leading articles dealing with horror scenarios of parallel societies endangering democracy and Vorzeigeintegrationslebensläufe, NEXT GENERATION, conceived in the future houses of the Ruhr, tells the story of a life between a multi-cultural background and the individual search for identity in its own words, a lot more authentic and comprehensible than those of the self-proclaimed migration experts and pub populists.
„Dear NEXT GENERATION, herewith, we pass on our theatre to you. We have shown you how it works. But you have written this play, and you will write it on in the future – seize this space, use it to dream in it, to fail, to fly, or simply to play.“ (Sascha Kölzow/Jessica Páez)
The young theatre cast of „NEXT GENERATION – The play“ confidently accepts the trust bestowed on them by the dramaturgic advisors of the play beforehand (the quotation above was made by them), showing a 90 minutes long portrayal of current social circumstances on the stage of the Bochum intimate theatre in a breathtaking pace.
Accompanied by the live songs of the NEXT GENERATION sub-project, X-Vision Ruhr – which will give its record release concert after the performance on November 12 – the central element, the central issue of the production is the one about people’s dreams, and the answers of the protagonists are as individual as their respective background stories.
„My dream is everything. To do everything I want. I am not undecided, I just want everything. And be happy, make happy.“ (Ella Dahmen)
„Well, I only have one dream. My dream is that all nations, no matter if they are Germans, Turks, Afghans, Russians, Kurds, …, sit together at one table and play a game of poker." (Hassan Omayrat)
This January, RUHR.2010 director Asli Sevindim has praised the activities of the NEXT GENERATION in the regional future houses as a „picture-perfect project of the capital of culture“ during the project’s official kick off.
Now, the completed work deserves to be called successful – because of the room for development it has provided, and because of the unflagging commitment of the young cast. So, finally it’s more a hope than a threat when all these young people announce future presidents will emerge from the likes of them.

(Hassan Omayrat)Due to the grace of youth, their visions haven’t been crushed by the reality of adulthood. They still believe in a better world.
At the same time, the NEXT GENERATION doesn’t ignore everyday problems. It can’t do that anyway, being confronted with them all the time. An extreme case, for example: the German law and its tolerance rules doesn’t allow you to leave the federal state of your residence.
How much room should there be in your life for the question about your home country? You can discuss that topic – and agree to a procedure which deals less with the issue of origin and rather with the issue of future.
