Music in the city: Elle Bandita.
- Series: Kunst
Rotterdam has a vibrant music scene. Because of the codarts conservatoire, and especially its singer-songwriter course, Rotterdam is filled with young (pop)musicians.
Somehow it seems that a city which houses an art-academy attracts a lot of selftaught artists as well. Often, these artists turn out to be more influential on the current music scene as the ones that were scholarly trained. I’m clueless why this is. Perhaps the selftaught get more time on stage, as that is their only way to get experience?
Elle Bandita is a shining example of this train of thought. Selftaught, shameless and gifted with the ability of wailing mean solos out of her guitar. For a couple of years she travelled from stage to stage with nothing more than her guitar, a drumcomputer and a pair of hotpants, screaming her way through amazed audiences. Since her last album Queen of fools, she set herself up with a charming, all-male band and her show has grown full size. This summer she toured all the big Dutch festivals and prospects for 2010 are the international ones.
For some uncompromising rockjuice, she is your one and foremost stop in town.
Check out her last single, Barbies & Zombies and see what I’m getting at:

Capital of Culture 2001 and City Of Architecture 2007. The Dutch port city is not only one of the most important hubs of global economy - it also reflects symptomatically the urban challenges of our time.
