Review 2010: Music across all boundaries
- Series: Ruhr Music
Music is one major part of culture, probably the one that everyone can relate to. So it is not surprising that 2010LAB.tv featured all kinds of different genres, events, concerts and musicians in 2010 – this review wants to give an overview.
Almost every boy dreams of being a Rock star. Being on stage and playing music (no matter what kind of music) is the greatest thing on earth. Whether on the Death Feast Open Air in Hünxe or at the Echo Jazz Award in Bochum – the passion for music brings people together, all over the world.
While New Model Army´s Justin Sullivan used music as the weapon of his choice to fight against different governments, legendary Jazz bass player Steve Swallow is talking about the changes Jazz music has been going through for the past 40 years.
The Ruhr Metropolis did not miss world class classical music during the European Capital of Culture 2010. Fazil Say, one of the greatest artists of the 21st century, performed his overwhelming concert series "Time Island II Fazil Say Istanbul Symphony" in four consecutive evenings at the concert hall in Dortmund.
From January to December 2010, the Ruhr Metropolis was dedicating a unique homage to Hans Werner Henze. In an interview with 2010LAB.tv, he revealed his relation to creativity and the Ruhr area.
Three young passionate film artists from the Ruhr produced seven episodes of "The Ruhr area – Recorded and Remixed" dealing with the local music scene. Be it HipHop, Metal, or Dance Music – each style has its own roots, fans, and locations.

The Ruhr area is not the only area with an active music scene - Rotterdam has vibrant "Music in the City". Elfie Tromp kept us posted all the year round about what was going on in the Netherlands' second biggest city.
With 65.000 singers, !Sing – Day of Song was the largest choir ever, and Bobby McFerrin was the star of this event. A day before the concert, 2010LAB.tv spoke to the legend about music and its cultural significance.
Music is a global cultural good. And the internet makes it much easier to work as a musician and interact with others around the globe. 20 years ago, fameless bands did not have many possibilities to go on tour in foreign countries. Today, it is no longer rare that an unknown band like The Pigskins brings hard beats from Istanbul to Essen. But human networks still cannot be replaced by the worldwide web: The Ruhr Music Commission is a network for the music industry and considers itself as a voice for all parts of the music business in the Ruhr region.

What happens when music stops? Nothing… life must go on. But there would be missing something important – passion.
