In this last week, nobody wants to meet for coffee only

If you have friends in Rotterdam, big chance their phones will be switched off from 27th of January to the 6th of February. Nobody will want to meet you for coffee alone. If you add a movie, they might reconsider.

Although it’s raining cats and dogs, tonight is the opening of the annual International Film Festival Rotterdam and I’m quite sure tout arty-Rotterdam will be present. All the belles and beasts of international (arthouse) film-industry gather this week in our town and lavish themselves upon the new releases and afterparties, bien sûr!

Tickets are usually sold out weeks in advance and all the art-students skip school, volunteering at the festival in return for free tickets. Being more of a theatre-going-kinda-gal, I’m not even going to try and make a well-balanced decision between the movie of an up-and-coming director from Vietnam or a high-brow and highly obscure French moviemaker. My recipe for the coming week, has been the same for years: Going to the cinema on a Wednesday-morning and choosing whichever film is starting and still has tickets available. For the past five years, it never failed to surprise and satisfy me.

Cinéma, sweep me off my feet, mon amour!

City

Rotterdam
Capital of Culture 2001 and City Of Architecture 2007. The Dutch port city is not only one of the most important hubs of global economy - it also reflects symptomatically the urban challenges of our time.
