De Groene Passage: Rotterdam’s eco-friendly heart
- Series: Kreativ.Quartier.Ruhr
Right on the border of Rotterdam’s city centre, lies the biggest biological shopping mall of The Netherlands, De Groene Passage (The Green Alley) has its own biological supermarket, drugstore, restaurant, lifestyle store, book store, workshop centre and giftshop, and is an unique concept in Europe.
Shedding the cheesy image
2500 square meters of responsible shopping is the dream of every yoga student, health freak and hippy, but De Groene Passage aims for a bigger crowd and with the upcoming trends of green and eco-friendly everything, this dream is getting fulfilled. On a regular weekday, students stand in line at the counter, behind soccer moms and granny’s on their day out. De Groene Passage is turning into the place to be!
It is situated in a shopping mall originally founded in the sixties. Due to extensive restructuring, De Groene Passage breathes modern living since 1997. It has succesfully shaken off the cheesy image eco-friendly shopping was connected to. With a connecting hallway and open, spacious shop openings, it feels more like entering a comfortable meeting ground instead of a new-age centre (which is also situated in the nooks of the mall).

Green Alleys taking over?
As of yet, De Groene Passage has no plans to extend their succes. The coming of new eco-friendly food markets, shops and festivals around town are not considered competition; instead it is seen as a natural flow, of which De Groene Passage might very well be considerd the city’s eco-friendly core.
