Anička – park

A place to chill out in Kosice, situated next to the river Hornád

Northern end of the town is dedicated to relax and leisure activities. Huge park is everyday visited by citizens of the town, no matter what the season is. People walking their dogs, cats, babies, partners or just themselves find there tranquil atmosphere during the busy days that the town supply us with permanently.

Now it is winter and most of the park facilities are not operating. Despite that, the park offers its own  natural environment independent of any commercial activities. As welcome you will understand why the symbol of the town is a crow. There are hundreds, maybe thousands of them, flying and screaming, acting like they don't care but always carefully watching your steps. The southern part of the park is their territory.

Other birds are minority here, sharing trees with squirrels. Sometimes happen that plenty of food from trees attracts also other animals, like in December 2010 when flock of wild boars had been seen there and even attacked a dog and followed a runner. That must have been a surprise during a sport afternoon. The park lies next the to river Hornad, where wild ducks swim.

History of spa in the park

During years 80's of 19th century it was a bloom of local spa. Baths were built, together with restaurant and dance saloon. At WWI a comedown took his time, but shortly afterwards in 1923 the spa was renovated with the help of the army. Later a swimming pool and football playground was added to the complex. In 1924 there was a goal line of the Kosice marathon and some next years also the start line.

From years 30's of last century there was not any new building and the area started to waste away slowly. After WWII it got a name Anicka, what is a female name in slovak and the source of origin is unknown. It could be simple a lady working at local pub. Since 70's a swimming pool Ryba is opened there, working until present. Operating in summer it offers together with mini golf, tennis, football and playground for children a popular destination.

Since 1995 a well spring is available for public, open daily from 8am till 6pm in winter and from 6am till 8pm in summer (april – september). Of course for free. It is a light mineral water coming from 30 meter depth with characteristic “eggs” flavor and smell. Water will gain after 24 hours of storage a stronger smell and changes color, however it is hygienic unobjectionable. Still it is recommended to consume within 12 hours to keep the origin qualities.
