American Icons
- Series: EUROPE IN SHORTS
By Werner Busch. What's even more American than picket fences and apple pie? Cadillacs for example. And half-naked women in the desert. In that landscape's magical light a man is travelling home in his Cadillac. But the unexpected encounter with a beautiful stranger abruptly interrupts his journey. The secret of this lady's unconventional dress-code and her enigmatic briefcase will have quite an impact on our protagonist's itinerary.
The pictures of WILD SIDE, recorded and directed in the US by the French filmmakers Guillaume Moreels and Noah Nuer couldn't be more American. But still some decisive elements of their film didn't come to pass until they were home in Paris, France. Moreels for example enhanced several shots via digital compositing in post-production. He inserted cactuses, resurrected gas stations and even dramatised cloud formations. This careful work on details continued on the audio track designed by his colleague Noah Nuer. With the addition of a forward-surging montage style WILD SIDE became an lovingly created short road movie with a twist. The film is a prime example of exactly the kind of concentrated diligence the short film genre requires in high dosage. But technical perfection is only a means to an end – in order to transfer the fun the filmmakers had in telling and producing their story onto the watching audience.
The two directors are part of Baleine Sous Caillou Productions, which besides short film also produces websites, documentary and full-length features. The BSC is a co-op of young filmmakers and media designers, who with the help of synergy effects of creative forces try to maintain their independence.
